Buying Custom T Shirts Online. Here’s The Top 5 Things You Need To Know.
Buying Custom T Shirts online. Pick t shirts, upload design, add lettering, check out and presto! Buying custom t shirts online is supposed to be that easy right? Ask anyone that has done this for the first time and a maddening hysterical laugh will commence. Buying custom t shirts online should not be confusing. Hence, the Top 5 things you need to know when buying custom t shirts online. Especially, if this is your first time.
1. Find A Company That Will Explain The Process Of Buying Custom T Shirts Online.
I first got into the screen printing and embroidery industry almost 25 years ago.
Back then if you needed custom t shirts you would simply go to the phone book and call the company with the biggest ad.
Generally, the printer with the biggest ad had been in business for many years.
They would take the time and make sure no matter the situation to explain the process thoroughly.
Didn’t matter if it was over the phone or in person, but there was an education process on how your order of printed t shirts would come to life.
I’m seeing very little of this today and the net result is not good. Especially online.
Customers are procrastinating until the last minute.
Printers are not asking the right questions and setting the right expectations.
I get it. People complain about having less time.
But the time it takes to place blame on a botched order is well worth the investment for both parties.
Many moons ago, I used to get questions about the types of inks I was using.
Today, the printer and the customer would like to throw the shirt in the microwave and have it magically appear done.
It is absolutely imperative, especially if it’s your first time buying custom t shirts online that things are explained.
This doesn’t need to take long.
As a customer, if it’s not clear how your order will be processed and completed-ask.
I would reach out to the screen printer and confirm any concerns or questions you may have.
2. Time Frame For When It Comes To Buying Custom T Shirts Online.
I’m always interested to know when a customer visits my shop online or in person what expectations they have of the printer they’re going to go with.
The big one, especially the last few years is time frame.
More so than ever before I’m hearing customers complain about orders that have gone bad. Simple things too.
It’s not as if I didn’t have rush orders 25 years ago, but the frequency in which we are having them is substantial.
Many printers both new and old are hungry for business, but because they are poorly organized they truly don’t know if they can handle the volume or not.
The dysfunction of not being organized will cause small mess ups.
For example, prints on the wrong side of the shirt or ordering the wrong color of shirt.
If you are a business or an individual with a deadline that you must meet its important to ask the printer how his/her jobs are prioritized.
If the printer takes your order and doesn’t have an exact day by which it will be finished- you should be concerned.
When buying custom t shirts online find out exactly what the time frame is for your order to be complete.
If the printer is vague indicating that “they’ll be done in a few weeks” you need to clarify what that means.
If the person that takes your order is also the printer- be aware.
Solo printers do incredibly good work, but organization tends not to be their strong suit.
3. Minimums, Set up Fees and Digitizing Fees For Buying Custom T Shirts Online.
25 years ago it seemed like 100% of companies charged for up front fees for custom t shirts.
Minimums, set up fees, digitizing fees or any other fees for customized apparel is not what it once was.
Technology has made it easier on printers and embroiderers to convert artwork.
While there is still some work involved in getting your artwork prepped more and more companies are skipping these fees.
If your order has more than 24 pieces most printers will not charge you.
When buying custom t shirts online there are a few companies that don’t have minimums or any setup fees at all.
If you are going to use a company that charges these fees ask these questions.
- Are your setup fees recurring or one time?
- Once I pay for the artwork to be vectorized or digitized do I get to keep it?
- Are there set up fees if I do (different) multiple prints on the same shirt?
- Do you I have to order a certain amount? Are there fees if I don’t order your minimum?
4. When Buying Custom T Shirts Online It’s Important To Carefully Read The Reviews.
A bad customized t shirt is like a bad food dish- both leave a bad taste in your mouth.
Most printers have a process in place to ensure their exposure to mistakes are very limited.
The majority of printers will send out proofs and confirm your order prior to completion.
Printers in major markets will have access to local t shirt distributors.
So if they have a Q/A person and there’s a mistake the printer can quickly get it resolved.
There’s nothing quite like a customer showing up with a deadline minutes away and there’s a major mistake.
Reviews will quickly tell you if there’s an underlying problem with the printer and how he/she does business.
5. Lastly, When Buying Custom T Shirts Online Don’t Hesitate To Ask For References.
What is the best way of verifying the type of work a printer does? Legitimate References.
Like a job interview, references will provide answers to necessary questions that you might not get otherwise.
Taking due diligence up front could potentially save you from making a costly decision.
